Apple iPad: First Thoughts

Apple iPad with keyboard dock

Apple have finally unveiled a tablet computer, the iPad. The anticipation leading up to this launch and the speculation surrounding it has been truly staggering. Yet I find myself strangely underwhelmed by the device.

MusicMate

iTunes

I know that everybody and his dog has written an AppleScript for extracting currently playing track information from iTunes but, despite a little Googling, I didn’t find any that exactly suited my purposes. So, naturally, I went and rolled my own.

iPod Commercial

I am serving hundreds of 404 errors each day for visitors who are coming to this website via a search for variants on the phrase “iPod Commercial” (and, less commonly, “iPod Silhouette”). I thinks this stems from a post from way back in 2004 (in the previous incarnation of this weblog) which described my unbridled joy at having purchased my first iPod.

“iPod Commercial” is by far the most frequently used search term that brings new visitors here. So, rather than alienate those visitors (and potential subscribers), I’ve decided to publish this to at least give them something for their troubles.

Now I can do some mod_rewrite magic to get those visitors to this page and maybe make my error logs a bit more manageable.

True Believer

E-Type

I frequently discover new artists or tracks on commercial radio or, with ever-increasing frequency, I am introduced to them by my children (usually my nearly-teenaged daughter). She sits for hours watching Clubland TV, singing along and learning new dances. Or, if my son has taken over the TV with his Wii or PlayStation, she’ll be in some chat-room on the Internet while her iTunes plays away in the background.

So every now and then, I’ll hear something that grabs my attention and, faster than a speeding bullet, I’ll have added new tracks or albums to my own iTunes library. Some of this music might only be played once and then forgotten. But a recent addition has been played 128 times since I downloaded it on the 9th November, 2008.

That track is called True Believer by the Swedish group, E-Type. It’s an awesome track that I have found really hard to define the genre of. It’s Euro-dance, no it’s rock, no sorry it’s techno, or is it trance? Whatever, I’ve found it to be a great foot-tapper of a song, a sing-along song, an air-guitar/air-drum kind of song and I just can’t stop listening to it. And the play count I’ve quoted above doesn’t tell the whole story either - because I repeatedly play this track on YouTube too so that I can soak up the atmosphere of the band on stage (and admire the erotic dancing of Dilnarin “Dee” Demirbag).

I heartily recommend an exploration of E-Type’s music to all three of my readers. Other great tracks by the band that you should at least listen to once include: Eurofighter, Life and The Tide. Go on, give your ears a treat.

The Fate of The Haçienda

Blimey, I was completely ignorant of the fact that the world-famous nightclub, The Haçienda, had been demolished and replaced with apartments. I enjoyed one spectacular night out there - back in the day. I’m in shock.
